The 5th of March represents the beginning of the 2018 National Apprenticeship Week. A week where “employers and apprentices, from across England will come together to celebrate the success of apprenticeships whilst encouraging more people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career.”

At RM plc we are taking this opportunity to celebrate the first group of recruits to our own apprenticeship schemes.

Apprentices learn the theory behind their respective roles, working towards relevant vocational qualifications; whilst putting theory into practice working on exciting projects and gaining hands-on experience in the workplace.

For this blog post our digital marketing apprentice, Jordan Sanders, spoke with his fellow apprentices about their experiences of the apprenticeship training scheme at RM Results so far.

What do RM plc’s apprentices have to say?

Prior to joining the apprenticeship scheme at RM Results, Jordan was on a very different career path, working as a sports copywriter after completing a law degree. “I was attracted by the opportunity to retrain in something different from my degree. Also, it was an opportunity to work for a great company in a sector that interests me.”

Jordan isn’t the only one taking a different career path than initially planned. Eleanor, our RM Results apprentice service consultant, has transitioned from the world of childcare and is: “loving working and learning at the same time for somewhere that is such a great place to work.”

Ikra, our RM Education apprentice project coordinator, found an apprenticeship an appealing proposition as she “loved the idea of being able to gain work experience and a qualification at the same time. This pushed me to go for an apprenticeship, instead of following the traditional route to university.”

Settling in to any role has its challenges, and as an apprentice this is certainly no exception. Our apprentices have had to overcome the minefield of acronyms, finding the right answers for customers on the phone and gaining confidence to ask questions of senior staff members to name a few. Other than these minor hiccups however, our apprentices are really enjoying their roles. Kayleigh, our RM Education apprentice service engineer, chose an apprenticeship at RM because: “it is a real confidence boost, being right at the heart of the action on the phone helping customers.”  On the other hand, Mac our IS Operations apprentice support engineer, is enjoying the “variety and travelling around that comes with my role.”

Apprenticeships are about gaining skills that are most relevant to the workplace, which is great for Bianca our RM Education procurement apprentice, as her favourite thing about her role is “constantly picking up important skills and discovering tasks that I enjoy doing and that I’m quite good at as well.”

Encouraging others to choose the apprenticeship route

So would our apprentices recommend others follow in their footsteps and do an apprenticeship? Bianca certainly would, as “Doing an apprenticeship has kick-started my career and has put me in a better position than I ever thought I could be. There is nothing more valuable in business than experience, and an apprenticeship provides this in abundance.” Kayleigh agrees, “Apprenticeships are a great way to start your career and you get a qualification as a bonus. They can be tough, but you should never give up on what you want to achieve.”

All of our apprentices are very fond of the inclusive team atmosphere, this is praised by Eleanor: “As an apprentice you are certainly made to feel part of the team, and you get lots of support from your colleagues and other apprentices. I would definitely recommend it.”

Georgie, our RM Results project communication apprentice, summarises what is so great about apprenticeships; something that is agreed with by all of our apprentices: “It gives you so much independence and the experience is second to none, you can get a hands-on view of the working world and start creating your perfect career, whilst earning! It can really develop you as a person and as you start to have important responsibility, you gain so much confidence.”
